The Asian Conservation Studio and Scientific Research Laboratory at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (MFA) has put together the Ukiyo-e Print Colorant Database of non-invasive research on colorants and dyes used for Edo-era (1603-1868) Japanese woodblock prints. It includes short histories and close analysis of the dyes found in the MFA’s collection, as well as visual examples of each.

Whether you work with Japanese woodblock prints at your institution and need guidance or are just curious about how these vibrant colors were made, this resource offers an excellent look at the artistry and history of creating color in Japan.

Also, check out the bibliography of publications related to the research.
